Idiom: an expression having a special meaning which is not clear from the usual meaning of the words in the expression




To spill the beans

Definition: to tell (reveal) a secret

EXAMPLE: I hope my brother doesn't spill the beans.

EXAMPLE: Kevin was in prison because his partner spilled the beans.



To sell someone short

Definition: to underestimate someone

EXAMPLE: It is not smart to sell people short because they often surprise you.

EXAMPLE: Harry's motivation was the people who sold him short in his youth.



To drive someone up the wall

Definition: to annoy someone

EXAMPLE: The child's happy shrieks drove him up the wall.

EXAMPLE: When someone is tapping their pen on the table at a meeting, drives me up the wall.



To sell someone down the river

Definition: to abandon someone

EXAMPLE: I am waiting for Joe, but he is five hours late. It looks like he has sold me down the river.

EXAMPLE: The criminals sold their boss down the river to get less jail time.
