Study: Speaking With Immigrant Seniors and Their Families

Tuesday, September 21, 2010

Author: Kenise Murphy Kilbride
Date: 2010

This study explores the needs for holistic approaches to services for immigrant seniors and their families. The author conduced focus groups with immigrant seniors and their sponsoring families throughout Ontario - 128 participants were seniors and 138 were family members.

Findings

The study found:

  • Seniors were isolated due to lack of English, lack of access to transportation, and confinement in the family home. Family members felt helpless to address the seniors' loneliness.
  • Health problems were exacerbated by lack of access to health care in their first language, and by underlying mental health conditions.
  • Seniors identified that they need fluency in English to address their loneliness and become contributing members of Canadian society.
  • Finances were a source of stress.
  • Housing was a source of conflict with families. Many seniors expressed a preference for independent living over multigenerational living.
  • Financial stress, the density and demands of living arrangements and differences in childrearing practices were causes of senior abuse.
  • Participants saw first-language settlement services and information as very valuable.
  • Participants were disappointed with the lack of integration into the community.
