University of Regina offers students a 'guarantee'

SASKATCHEWAN (CBC) - The University of Regina is offering its graduates a guarantee: Find a meaningful job within six months or get another full year of classes at no cost.

Currently the university boasts a highly successful post-graduation employment rate through a co-op program that matches students with potential employers.

University president Vianne Timmons says the new guarantee should build on that success.

"Right now 97 per cent of our [co-op] students get employed in a career of their choice within six months," Timmons said during a media conference Wednesday. "We want to push that to 100 per cent, and so we're very confident we can guarantee this for our students."

A student must meet several requirements in order to qualify for the guarantee, including maintaining a 70 per cent average, participating in skills development workshops, and getting involved in extracurricular activities such as student clubs.

The university also says the guarantee promises a job that is relevant to post-secondary studies. Enrolment in the program is not compulsory.
