Assaulted Women's Helpline

This 24-hour helpline maintains a current database of lawyers who deal with women's issues in communities throughout the province. You can call specifically for a referral, visit the Assaulted Women's Helpline website, or call 1-866-863-0511.

Femaide: A Help Line for Abused Women

Femaide is a provincial telephone number that automatically connects French-speaking women to a help line for women who are victims of violence. Calls are directed according to location to one of three regional lines in the province. This free, confidential service is offered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. It offers assistance, someone who will listen, intervention in an emergency, and referrals for women who need housing, counselling, and other forms of support.

Located in family law courts in 17 regions of the province, Family Law Information Centres provide information on alternative dispute resolution options and issues related to separation and divorce and child protection. Law Society of Upper Canada Lawyer Referral Service

For a fee of $6, the Lawyer Referral Service will connect you with a lawyer who can look after your interests. However, individuals in police custody, individuals under the age of 18, those who are living in a shelter, and those who are victims of domestic violence may call 416 947-3330 in the Greater Toronto Area or toll-free 1 800 268-8326 from another part of the province. A lawyer will provide you with a free half-hour consultation, at the end of which you can decide whether you want to retain his or her services. The Lawyer Referral Service is offered in several languages and can also meet other special needs.

Legal Aid Ontario

Legal Aid Ontario offers free legal services on issues pertaining to child protection, custody, and support, visitation rights, and restraining orders. Legal Aid staff will examine your particular financial situation to determine whether you are eligible. Every case is different. Eligibility for Legal Aid is based entirely on your family responsibilities and monthly expenses.
