St Joseph’s Immigrant Women’s Centre in Hamilton, Ont., expands and opens a temporary location

Sam Vandenberg

The St Joseph’s Immigrant Women’s Centre has expanded and opened a temporary location in the city’s east end.

Through funding from Citizen and Immigration Canada (CIC) for the 2011-2012 fiscal year, which begins April 1, the centre will open a new location at 2255 Barton St.

Due to the fall of the Settlement and Integration Services Organization (SISO), the women’s centre and other service organizations have received funding in order to fill the gap left by SISO," said executive director Ines Rios.

The temporary centre will be staffed with three full-time and two part-time orientation and referral workers. There were 192 women that commuted to the centre’s four other locations after SISO shutdown because there was not an office in the east end.

The women’s centre helps immigrants obtain personal documents to become Canadian citizens. It also helps with finding affordable housing and helps women connect with services already in place in the community. Services at the centre will be available in a variety of different languages including Punjabi, Arabic, Pashto, Kurdish, Hindi, Bengali and Urdu.
