Timmins opens new Multicultural Centre

Timmins immigrants now have a place to access settlement services funded by the feds.

The Timmins and District Multicultural Centre opened its doors on the second floor at 12 Elm Street North, above the Timmins Economic Development Corporation, in late May.

There agency employs one staff member who can assist visitors in French and English.

The office will also support growing places in the areas like Kirkland Lake and Cochrane.

“We are starting small but once we develop the client numbers we will be looking to expand,” said Don Curry, executive director of the North Bay and District Multicultural Centre, in a release.

The centre will offer services ranging from job search assistance, accessing health care, signing up for the proper educational institution, getting a driver’s licence, health card and adjusting to life in the area.

There will also be a volunteer-based program established that will match newcomers with mentors.

Services will be free with the exception of document translation.
