A recent global poll conducted by research company Ipsos-Reid found that Canada is second among the top three countries who view immigration as a positive phenomenon.

While Brazil led the poll with 47 percent of respondents regarding immigration as positive, Canada and Australia followed closely with 43 and 36 percent respectively.

The research discovered that the more education people have under their belts, the more in favour they will be of immigration. Out of all the highly-educated Canadian respondents, sixty percent believed that immigration would benefit society.

Based on the study, economic situation also affected people’s opinion on immigrants. Countries with adverse economic situations and high unemployment rates were more likely to rule out immigration as negative.

In contrast, several experts like immigration expert Professor Jeffrey Reitz from the University of Toronto, pointed out that in Canada, immigration in fact led to creation of more employment and economic opportunities. Reitz refuted the common allegation that immigrants are a burden on social services as newcomers have been proven to make  less se of services than Canadian-born residents.

The country is set to accept the highest number of immigrants this year, a lot of them skilled workers. Facing a declining birth rate and labour shortages, several are of the opinion that immigration can help Canada be more competitive in the world stage.
