Teacher taught newly paralyzed teenagers for three decades

As others were mending their bodies, Joanne Abeles was tending their minds.

And for generations of kids at the Lyndhurst Hospital spinal cord rehabilitation centre, Abeles was also bringing a bit of normalcy, teaching high school courses during their long absences from school.

After 32 years, Abeles said goodbye Tuesday to the program that helped 400 students, now cut by The Toronto District School Board.

She quickly realized the satisfaction of steering these newly injured and often still-traumatized teenagers through the education system. “Through school I got them to believe in themselves,” she says. “I worked hard to motivate them. I always focused on trying to find my students’ strengths. Anybody can learn and I’d always find a way.”
 
John, 23, says he found rehab a stressful environment and credits Abeles for his overall success. “She was a comfort for me in that place,” he adds. “Academically and personally, she pushed me.”
