One quarter of seniors taking 10 or more medications

Canadian seniors are consuming a startling amount of prescription medications, says a new report, revealing almost two-thirds take five or more drugs a day and one-quarter take a whopping 10 or more.

“They are at increased risk of drug interactions and side-effects because they are taking so many medications,” warns Cheryl Gula, one of the authors of Health Care in Canada, 2011: A Focus on Seniors and Aging.

As people age, they develop more chronic conditions like high blood pressure, heart failure and diabetes, and see more specialists and health-care providers. It's not unusual for prescriptions to come from different physicians and get filled at different pharmacies, said Gula, manager of health reports for the Canadian Institute for Health Information.

“They end up with a very complex mix of chemicals going into their bodies,” she said.
