The Dish: Which ice creams to avoid this summer

By Megan Ogilvie

"...there are some ice cream truths: a small vanilla cone is usually your best bet — nutrition-wise — and the largest size of shakes and ice creams blitzed with fancy toppings will almost always contain half the calories you should consume in a day.

So look for those small extravagances and enjoy every last bite.
Sorbets, sherbets and ices can save calories but often have more sugar than ice cream. And frozen yogurt, while sometimes a lighter choice, is not necessarily so when you choose a funky flavour and add toppings.

Watch out for toppings, including cookie crumbles, brownies, chocolate bar pieces, nuts, and fudge or caramel sauce. If you can't skip your fave, ask for a sprinkle or light drizzle to save calories, fat and sugar. At Cold Stone Creamery, adding in cookie dough will add 180 calories and 8 grams of fat.

Skip the whip — you already have the creaminess of the ice cream. For example, at Dairy Queen leaving off the whipped topping will save 90 calories and 7 grams of fat.

Look for fresh fruit toppings. Fruit in syrups and sauces can be higher in added sugars.

Choose to get your ice cream in a bowl or plain cake cone to save 100 calories or more. At Baskin Robbins, the waffle cone has 160 calories and 4 grams of fat.

Go for the smallest size of the one you love and savour it - don't make it a weekly habit."
