Celebration

Vardavar or Vartavar also known as ‘World Water Day’.

It is the festival of the Transfiguration, celebrating the transfiguration of Jesus Christ.

It is an Armenian festival, where people drench each other with water.

The festival is associated with the goddess Astghik, who was the goddess of beauty, fertility, water and love in the era of the Armenian gods. People offered her roses as celebration so the festivities were originally called Vartavar.

Vartavar in Armenian language means, Vart means “Rose” and Var mean “Rise”.

That is why it was celebrated in the Harvest time.

Vardavar is celebrated 14 weeks after Easter, so it is held on different days of July.

During the Vardavar Days, people of different ages or in one group together against another group are allowed to douse strangers with water. The children love the festival because, they can get away with pulling pranks on strangers, people and friends.

Also we can’t forget about Armenian folk song, included in festival and performed by the “Nairyan“  vocal ensemble.

That was one of my Armenian national and tradition culture festival.
