Family

Today is a nice warm day in Toronto. I have already drunk two cups of tea and ate my homemade whole-grain biscuits. I am going to write something about my cousin. Last night I went to her house because her son is getting married this Saturday. So last night we had a good time. We made Rangoli, Jago, and sung folk wedding songs until midnight. I am going to write about how I met my cousin's sister. In my childhood, I had never have seen her. She is my dad's cousin's sister's daughter. My dad's cousin got married and moved to another city. When her children grew up, she came to Canada. My dad knew she was in Canada, but later my parents came here, they had no idea where she was. He didn’t even have an address or phone number, but he was motivated to find his cousin. At that time, cell phones were not invented and only a few people had a landline. My dad every morning used to pick up the White Pages book (a book with all the landlines in it), and any same last name he saw in the book-he would call. I think it took months, but he didn't give up. One morning he dialed the phone and a lady picked up. He said he wanted to locate a person and he gave her the name. She said, “I am speaking.” Then his next question was where from back home were you. She gave an answer from this city. When she told him her city’s name, my dad told her his name and said I am speaking and you’re my cousin. She was so excited because she never thought this day would come! She told my dad nobody was home right now, but I will call you later. She hung up the phone and dialed her son at work and told him to come home right way. Her son came home, and they drove together from Scarborough to Mississauga to my Dad’s home. When they finally met, they were both so excited since they never thought they were going to meet again in life. That's how I know my cousin. After thirty years, last night we talked to them. Of course, my parents have passed, and his cousin’s mom has passed too. Now her grandson is getting married and we all got together last night and enjoyed ourselves until midnight! Life is funny in that people have a way of visiting through their relatives, even if they are no longer with us! It never would have happened if my Dad had not called all those numbers to find her cousin all those 30 years ago.
