Homeland

map of Republic of Colombia through magnifying glass

Colombia is a very varied country, full of cheerful people and delicious food.

These are some of its customs:

We drink coffee, all day and all the time. In the mornings, rest times, after meals, in meetings there is always a good excuse to drink a good cup of coffee.

If we have something to celebrate, we always do it by dancing, meeting with family, friends and neighbors, for example when the football team of our country plays, it is an excellent reason to celebrate. Doesn't matter if our team win or lose. There is a typical meal that you can find everywhere in Colombia and it is ‘arepa’. This soft corn mixture, sweet, salty, with cheese, with meat, fried, roasted. All over Colombia you can find it.

Colombia is a country mostly Catholics. On December 7th, we celebrate the day of the Virgin Mary, in every city of Colombia. At night, in the streets we light thousands of candles and lanterns. It is very nice to go for a walk, and see how people worked together. For many people this day becomes officially the first day of Christmas.

In Colombia it is a custom, to combine meals with natural fruit juices. Colombia is a country with a great variety of exotic fruits not found in other countries of the world. At lunch you cannot miss a delicious natural fruit juice. Now, that I live in Canada, I drink more water with food (I don't like artificial juices), but when I go to markets and I can find food from my country, I try to buy exotic fruits and continue the tradition of drinking fruit juice with meals.

These are some of the customs of my country that I want to share.

Thank you!
