Settlement

canada and india flag

My journey started in Canada in January 2018. I am from India. My family is my husband and 7 years old son.

We landed directly in Spiritwood, Saskatchewan, because my husband got the job while we were in India. Spiritwood is a lovely small town with almost population of 1000 people. When we landed in Canada, we landed in Saskatoon, where my husband’s company accommodated a hotel stay for a couple of nights. After, his company’s driver took us up to Spiritwood. They also searched and finalized a house for us in Spiritwood when we were still in India. It was a big change for us because in January, the temperature was minus 35, and we had never faced such a low temperature in our lives. We accepted that change and got used to this type of condition in a few days.

One month later, everything settled down and I started looking for a job. But I couldn’t get job in my field. In my country, I was a Lab technician but here in Canada, it’s a regulated field and I needed to pass my Licence exams. I contacted the Licencing authority and asked them what I should do to get licence and what documents were needed. I started gathering all my documents to be eligible for the licence exams. It was very time consuming, stressful and challenging. But finally, I am happy that I got a letter saying I am eligible to write exams.

In the meantime, I planned to do food service job and for that I took a short course and I finally landed a job in food services.

One day, I saw one advertisement on bulletin board of Spiritwood, saying “Improve your English-for Newcomers”. So, I contacted them, and I started my English classes. Fortunately, I got such a nice and knowledgeable teacher Ms. Priyanka Singh. I started to study English by video conferencing. It benefitted me a lot and I can feel the difference day by day in improvement of english fluency.

Also, I was preparing well for the licence exams, it was very difficult for me to manage my house chores, study, social life and job. But I did it well and appeared for the final exam. After some days of wait, I got an email from them that I did not pass the exams. I was very much disappointed with my performance as I was only 3 marks short of passing, but I accepted the challenge and this time I closely looked at my report card and specially gave attention to the areas where I could improve. I attempted the exam second time and finally I received email saying that I am successful. I jumped with joy.

By this time, my husband got a job in Saskatoon and we moved to Saskatoon. I started to search jobs in Saskatoon, specially in hospitals.

After almost a month of search, I got an interview, was successful and on that day finally my dream to work in my field come true.

So now I am more than happy that I settled down successfully in Canada and working in my field.

My humble advice to all newcomers is don’t lose hope, don’t be disappointed with failures, but keep trying, be calm, study hard and one day you will get success!
