Celebration

Wedding bread loaf decorated with a rushnyk

The wedding is one of the most colourful and memorable day in life. Ukrainian wedding is a traditional marriage ceremony in Ukrainian culture. A beautiful and sacred segment of a Ukrainian wedding ceremony is the Crowning. The bride and groom place their right hands on the gospel and exchange their vows. Crowns are placed or held above the heads of the bride and groom. The Ukrainian wedding includes some wedding traditions, games and surprises.

So, let's begin.

The groom goes to the bride’s parent’s house in morning to pay the ransom to get his bride. If the bride’s parents meet the groom at the door with a pumpkin, it means that his offer of marriage was not accepted by either the bride or by her family. If in the front of the door there is no pumpkin, the groom feels happy. Behind the door the girls ( bride's friends) worked hard to up the price of the ransom. They ask him questions and every wrong answer requires him to pay more. They force him to shower her with compliments and do whatever was necessary to get him to drop more cash.

The ransom is followed onto parents’ blessing. The couple and parents exchanged bows, and the parents give the bride and groom their best Ukrainian wedding wishes and blessings for a happy and prosperous marriage.

Almost every Ukrainian wedding ceremony will see the couple step on a traditional embroidered cloth (referred “rushnyk”) before they take their vows.

On Ukrainian wedding ceremony the wedding rings are slipping onto the right hand.

Ukrainian wedding cake is a large round braided bread decorated with various symbols and figurines that’s given to the bride and groom as a marriage blessing. It’s delicious and slightly sweet.

One of the Ukrainian wedding reception traditions is the “kidnapping of the bride”. It may happen numerous times. The bride would disappear from the banquet hall and be held captive by her bridesmaids until the groom carried out some dares.

Ukrainian weddings are famous for toasts. Every toast end in a famous Ukrainian phrase “Hirko!” It means that the bride and groom have to kiss.

On Ukrainian wedding there are many more games and activities to make the wedding celebration amazing!
