Celebration

silohuette of muslim man praying by window under the moon

Ramadhan is the month of fasting for Muslims. It is in the 9th month of the lunar months. Fasting is when we abstain from foods, drinks, and sexual relations, from sunrise to sunset. Fasting is obligatory for adult Muslims in Ramadhan except those who are sick or have a chronic disease, are travelling or women going through menstruation. Pregnant women or those breastfeeding a baby have the choice to fast or stop fasting. Fasting helps people develop self- control and learn patience. It also lets them feel how difficult poor people's lives are without food and drink.

Ramadhan is also the month of the Quran. We read and listen to the Quran and we try to understand the meaning of the quranic verses more than the others months. We do more prayer, at night and we do a special prayer for Ramadhan. It is the Tarawih Prayer.

Ramadhan is special because all the people of the city eat at the same time. All the family members sit around the table and eat together during the month. Children are very happy when they try fasting. For example, they want to do like the adults but they can't because they're a day too young. So, they only fast a few hours a day. It depends on the child's age. Usually, in the last 2 days of Ramadhan, the family should give a donation to the poor people. This donation is the zakat of aid. It should be the equivalent of 1 meal for all the family members.

At the end of Ramadhan, we celebrate aid adh'ha. We are happy because we practiced and learned to be better than before Ramadhan. I think we become a better human and are closer to Allah.
