Education

Small girl with hand up in classroom

When I turned six, my mother enrolled me in school. I remember my teacher. She was very friendly and wore a black and white polka-dot dress. I never attended kindergarten because my mom stayed at home with my brother and I. We lived 2.5 km from school so I walked 5 km every day. I was never tired from walking.

I had nice classmates in school. In those days there was no bullying. There were twenty students, half girls and half boys. I was a good student and always got a grade of 4 or 5. The teacher marked us on a scale of 1-5.My class would go to school from 8-12 pm in the morning one week, then we would swap with the other class and go from 1-5 pm the next week. We often went to puppet theaters, children's theater and amusement parks. At the end of the school year we made a play and invited our parents to come and watch. Over four years I had four different teachers.

When I was in grade 5 we moved to a nearby village where my parents built a house. From then on my school work was harder. I had more subjects like Hungarian literature, geometry, history, biology, geography, Russian language, art, music and physical education. I had to meet many new teachers and thirty new students. Everything went very well. I liked my teachers and classmates. My favourite teacher was the Hungarian literature teacher. She taught me until the 8th grade. She was the head teacher of my class and she liked all of her students. We had to learn so much, including memorizing many poems, but I liked it. During summer time we would go to a tent camp or the Balaton Lake. In 8th grade we went to Slovakia for a camping trip. We would often go to a live theater in Budapest which was 30 km from school.

What I liked the most was the forest that surrounded both my house and the school. There were animals in the forest such as deer, foxes, rabbits, rams, and pheasants. I liked to watch the animals and the changing of the seasons. I liked the fragrance of the frost and the spring wind. In the fall, I died a little bit, but in the middle of November when the snow covered everything I was well. My class and I waited for Santa Clause. He came on December 6th and on Christmas Jesus would bring the Christmas tree and presents. I liked it when the sunrays sparkled on the snow. We were always outside sledding.

I can say that I had a very nice childhood with good parents, good teachers and good friends. I think it was the best part of my life. I would have liked it for my kids when they were the same age.
