Employment

I am an immigrant from Indonesia and I have been in Canada for 5 years now. I would like to share a story about job hunting as an immigrant in Canada. It is not easy though, but I can tell you about some steps to get a job.

Firstly, try to work as a volunteer in the Thrift Store, Food Bank or other company that requires volunteers. Being a volunteer, you can improve your English because you will communicate with new people, like native speakers, for example, at work.

Secondly, you will learn how to work here at many different job positions. I worked as a sorter in that store for about five months and as a cashier for about one month. Thirdly, I took some programs from EK Employment( Employment Services Centre in British Columbia)that really help you develop your skills, for example : writing a good resume to get an interview, knowing the basic courses for landing you a job and giving you knowledge to set up your goals for your career. Finally, I really recommend that immigrants join EK Employment in the area in British Columbia where they live.

Hunting for a job in Canada is easier than in my country, if I have to compare, because everything is really organized here. They provide all of the information that you need, so you know exactly where and how to go. Welcome to Canada.
