Photo of student's garden

I had a small garden in my backyard this year. In early Spring, I prepared the earth and planted some vegetable seeds and plants. I was very excited! I grew a few tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchinis, hot peppers, lettuce, chives, beans, bok choy, and corn. They all grew huge! My neighbour asked me what was my secret? Was I using a special milk formula on my plants? Then one day something strange happened in my garden. I was devastated! I noticed that my garden was shrinking! Something was eating my vegetables! I would see half eaten cucumbers and tomatoes. My beans were ripped off the vine. And some of the zucchinis and most of the corn was all chewed up. I said to myself, “There must be some vegetarians running around, and they are very smart.” I noticed they really liked to eat the small, fresh vegetables. I thought to myself, “Am I feeding some animals?” Maybe it is a rabbit or a squirrel, or even some bird because I know that rabbits love eating lettuce and chives, squirrels love eating zucchini and cucumbers, and birds love eating ripe tomatoes and beans. It was definitely little animals. They were very happy to eat my vegetables in my small, bountiful garden. I thought that I am a good farmer to feed my family and all my little animal friends! Next year, I’ll plan for an even bigger garden and invite my little friends to join me. Can you imagine my garden next year? Who will come and eat my fresh vegetables? Maybe I’ll ask my teacher Anne if she can help me harvest my garden next year. But we might be surprised because my little friends might have done that for us.

Bosook sent photos of her bountiful garden before she saw any evidence of half eaten vegetables from her little visitors. Despite this, Bosook said that she had a fantastic harvest this year!
