Celebration

In my country there’s a very special celebration which is called the Day of the House.

This is a day, which a newly-wed couple selects during the religious wedding ceremony, and it will become the day of their family and home. They choose a saint to be the family protector. Usually that saint is somehow related to one of the members of the family and the day when that saint is celebrated becomes the day of the family.

On this day it is accustomed to have guests and have a celebration. Often, people bring fresh flowers and gifts for the home and for the family. Also, a priest may come in the morning to perform a blessing of the home while all the family members are present. The saint’s icon sits at a special place, with a lit candle in front of it and people pray for the family’s well-being to him.

On this day, the house is cleaned thoroughly, and a festive dinner is prepared. Also, guests are given a small gift in gratitude for celebrating the family.

For my country – Moldova - this is an important custom as it shows respect to the family traditions and values.
