When you look in the mirror what do you see? We don’t always see our own beauty, but an esthetician does. A person who is knowledgeable about the nature and appreciation of beauty is an esthetician. We can say an esthetician is a beautician or skin care specialist.

Now I am in college studying an advanced esthetics course. It is a one year course. This course includes basic knowledge about manicures, pedicures, waxing, electrolysis, laser, makeup and body massages etc. I am also working part-time in a “beauty shop” to get practical experience.

It has been my life long goal to become an esthetician. Since I was high in school, when my mother used to go to a party or somewhere “fancy” I used to put makeup on her, but I didn’t choose this field at first. I finished a university degree in sociology and I became a social worker. However, deep down in my heart I had an attraction towards beauty appreciation. When I came to Canada in 2013, after three months I started working in a company because I needed money to survive.  I started to research the opportunities for estheticians in Canada, and found a shop that agreed to teach me some basic skills.  I then knew that this was the right path for me. Finally, I enrolled in a college on June 10th of this year.

This career has many responsibilities and challenges. When we work we have to make customers happy. When we are working, if mistakenly we do something wrong, customers can get angry and may never come back because customers trust you and they give their body to you. That’s why you need to be careful all the time. While you are treating the client you need to know that client’s desire and treat that individual person. For example, one month ago a client came to me for a pedicure. She had an ingrown nail. By mistake I cut a little bit of skin and it bled. After that she was so mad at me and the owner too. This put a negative impact on the customer and on me and the salon. Problems happen sometimes, but still I love this job. After I treat clients and see them happy and satisfied, I also feel happy and satisfied.  I enjoy meeting different kinds of people from different cultures. This helps me learn many things from them.

In a nutshell, esthetics is all about beauty. This is more than skin deep. However, the external beauty helps gain the internal to achieve total beauty.  This is like helping a plant bloom in the garden that keeps an onlooker happy and smiling. Therefore, the esthetician is a gardener who always works in the beauty and spa salon to bring a smile to the faces of happy clients. When you next look in the mirror, hopefully you will see your beauty!
