I am an immigrant from Indonesia. I have been in Canada for five years now. My English is getting much better and better. I remember that my English wasn’t good enough when I arrived in Canada in 2012. I didn’t have any confidence talking to people. I was afraid to go out, go shopping in a supermarket, visit a bank or other places. I always asked my husband to accompany me wherever I went. It’s funny, wasn’t it? I used to study English in my country, but of course it’s different. My teacher was an Indonesian teacher, she wasn't a native speaker. We learned English but wasn't in a detail, it was a limited lesson.

I finally could improve my English since one of my friends had introduced me with free English courses for immigrants. The English courses were run by CBAL (Columbia Basin Trust Literacy). They run an English program once a week, every Wednesday. Unfortunately, I wasn’t always able to join the class because I was working at the time. I talked to my English teacher in CBAL if I could find an online English class; she finally introduced me to the LINC Home Study.

I was happy since I joined the LINC Home Study. The program was suitable for my needs because I could study from home. The program was very useful. I made a lot of progress in English. It’s not only about learning English as well as it is about the teacher. The teacher was very helpful. She really encouraged you to learn and supported you every time. The teacher was doing well in instructing me how to improve English.

Now, I am able to speak English confidently to people. I am able to listen to the news, movies etc. with clarity. I am improving my writing skills little by little. I am trying to read more now, hence I can enhance my vocabulary.

In conclusion, LINC Home Study is a very good program for learning English especially for immigrants. I think, everyone is obligated to join it. It is a very useful program for many aspects of our lives here in Canada; for working, studying, etc.
