Winter 2015

Seasonal

Boots in the snow

It was only a few hours before my plane would land in Canada, in the beginning of February. I was excited to travel to North America again, but I had never studied about Canada’s geography or weather before. I knew about Canada from watching the Olympic Games in Vancouver in 2010 on the television. I thought that Vancouver was the whole country of Canada. Finally, the plane landed.

My first stop in Canada was Vancouver airport, which was so crowded, but people were happily taking photos through the airport windows, with beautiful sunshine and scenery. I enjoyed Vancouver for a few hours and then continued on to the next flight to Saskatoon. I slept for the whole trip to Saskatoon and woke up when the flight attendants called us to get ready for landing. I looked out the window and it was so white! I asked, “What is it?” A passenger next to me said, “This is Canada.”

What is going on here? Why do people in Saskatoon hardly smile, wear a thick coat and big boots? Interesting! I walked out of the airport with light clothes and slippers and cried. The taxi driver asked me, “Where are you from? Don’t you know that Saskatoon is severe cold? Welcome, my dear.” However, on the way to where I was going to stay, the taxi driver suggested how to handle the cold in this city and where I could go by winter clothes and boots. He made me feel warm and I got a great welcome.

Early the next morning, with damp hair, I walked out to the bus stop to buy winter clothes. Not too long after, I heard a noise in my ears, “clank clank,” like two glasses hitting each other. What is that noise? I was shocked to feel my hair was frozen! I was scared! I ran home right away. I was afraid I would lose my hair, because it was breakable. Moreover, my toes were frozen when I took my sneakers off.

Studying a country’s weather before traveling is necessary. I realized that this is a real Canadian winter, and this cold will be gone in May. I finally learned to enjoy Canada in any weather, and I love winter.
