Winter 2015

Seasonal

Winter road with sunlight reflecting on asphalt

Canadian weather is unpredictable. Whoever lives in Canada knows this very well. Winter starts from 10c and drops down to -30c. Mostly in Canada, the winter season starts in November and ends in May. Some people enjoy winter and some of them just hate winter. I have discussed with lots of friends and family what they think about the winter season. I am going to share some stories so we will get an idea about how crazy winter is.

Most friends have complaints about limitation of travelling or commuting in the winter. Kids can’t go outside to play because their playground is covered with snow. All outside activity almost stops for the day. The day is shorter, and we just feel the night is longer. Wherever you go you have to carry extra winter clothes.  In winter we add extra work to our daily activity such as shoveling snow from the driveway.  Sometimes I like to do extra activity but not all the time.

I remember my first winter in Canada, which was my worst experience because I had an outside job at a gas station. I was not used to the winter season and I didn’t like winter too. Shoveling snow and melted snow in the store made the floor wet. For me, cleaning it up was hard work.  I had to help customers who got their vehicles stuck in the snow and the nasty wind chill bothered me all the time. Everywhere was whitewashed and piled up with snow. I just felt depression all the time.  There is no greenery in the winter season, and whenever you drive home or to work you get stuck in traffic because there are lots of accidents.  Winter driving needs more attention to drive any vehicle in slippery conditions.

I am a professional truck driver now, and here is my advice to enjoy travelling in winter safely:

  • check the weather all the time, and be prepared for the worst conditions
  • carry extra clothes for the worst conditions
  • if you drive a car, before winter visit a repair shop and update your car for winter
  • the mechanic will suggest some good tips
  • if you can afford winter tires then it’s good to install them on your car, but if you can’t afford winter tires then you have to pay extra attention when the road is slippery
  • take extra time to go anywhere
  • before you start driving, warm up your car
  • when heating is on open the window a little bit so fresh air can come inside and you don’t feel dizzy
  • always top up your fuel so you don’t accidentally get stuck somewhere.  If you do, be sure you warm yourself up, especially when you have kids
