“The Glass Castle”, as a captivating reflective book, written by Jeannette Walls, has had a very strong impact on me.  I think that the unbelievable story charmed me because it is based on authentic incidents. It has attracted my attention to read another similar episode.

Jeannette Walls wrote “The Glass Castle” about her unconventional childhood, were she shared fond memories of her family.  She showed how her parents refused to conform to society’s ideas of responsibility.  Jeannette’s story illustrates her parents as people who leave their children to fend for themselves even for the most basic needs, such as, food, clothing and shelter.  “The Glass Castle” is an astonishing memoir which shows the tragic circumstances in which the Walls family lived, which included moving many times to different places such as a desert in California, a small town in Arizona and The Battle Mountain.  In this powerful memoir, the writer tells the story of her upbringing in her poverty-stricken and dysfunctional family.

I think that “The Glass Castle” has made an incredible impression on me because this is an unusual book based on a true story. Now, I would like to explain, why. First, when I read this book, I became more sensitive than before.  I can’t be neutral when donations for children for basic needs, have to be organized.  Secondly, this kind of book makes my imagination richer.  The main heroine is illustrated from a different and unknown perspective to me so far.  I perceived that many people live in extreme poverty and they don’t want to change that.  Mary Rose and Rex Walls, as parents, taught their children to live in nonconventional conditions.  The young generation of this family had to count on themselves in most situations, especially in childhood.  Moreover, while reading “The Glass Castle”, I was very impressed with the determination of the main character.  Jeannette’s story lets me believe in something that I never expected before.
