Here is some vocabulary from this edition. Do you know what the words mean?

alleviate
to make something less painful or difficult to deal with

ambitious
determined to be successful, rich, powerful etc

apprentice
someone who works for an employer for a fixed period of time in order to learn a particular skill or job

autonomy
freedom that a place or an organization has to govern or control itself

blackjack
a card game, usually played for money, in which you try to get as close to 21 points as possible

cherish
to love someone or something very much and take care of them well

compelling
very interesting or exciting, so that you have to pay attention

convocation
the ceremony held when students have finished their studies and are leaving a college or university

despotic
to use power in a cruel and unfair way

donate
to give something, especially money, to a person or an organization in order to help them

goulash
a dish of meat cooked in liquid with a hot-tasting pepper, originally from Hungary

hibernation
sleep that lasts for the whole winter

itinerary
a plan or list of the places you will visit on a journey

maize
a tall plant with large yellow seeds that grow together on a cob, and that are cooked and eaten as a vegetable

nepotism
the practice of unfairly giving the best jobs to members of your family when you are in a position of power

pagoda
a Buddhist temple that has several levels with a decorated roof at each level

pianist
someone who plays the piano

ransom
an amount of money that is paid to free someone who is held as a prisoner

relocate
move to a different place

remittance
an amount of money that you send to pay for something

sabbatical
a period when someone stops doing their usual work in order to study or travel

trophy
a large object such as a silver cup or plate that someone receives as a prize for winning a competition
