Back to the time when I was in high school, that is a memory I've never forgotten. Studying and having fun with friends turned my youth into a wonderful time. After graduating from high school, I took a gap year because my family had some events happen to them.
And then, I enrolled in a university in Ho Chi Minh city which was far away from my house; about 180km. My major was Business English which took 4 years to finish. To be honest, I didn't enjoy it much. Studying in an environment with other students whose were younger than me made me feel shy and I could not integrate with them. I am an especially introverted person. It is not easy for me to make friends and talk with strange people.
The first year was really hard for me to go through. In addition, I was confused at that time. I did not know what job I wanted to do in the future; what I wanted to be; what I like: everything was vague. I did not want to waste more time to wait until it worked out. And one important thing, jobs related to English developed very well during that time in Vietnam. People could make ends meet if they were good at English.
So, those are the reasons why I decided to study that course. In my major, I needed to choose a second language to study which was one of the conditions of completing the course. Chinese was my choice. I really enjoyed it. I like the feeling of studying new things; especially, when I know nothing about it.
About learning English in my country, they usually focus on writing than speaking. We studied a lot of grammar and readings. With speaking, we don't have time to talk much in class and most teachers are Vietnamese. So, because of different accents, it's really hard to understand when we talk with foreigners. Compared to learning English in Canada, it's easier to improve our English skills because we live in an environment where people all speak English.
