Glossary

Here is some vocabulary from this edition. Do you know what the words mean?

amputate
to cut off someone’s arm, leg, finger etc during a medical operation

bait
food used to attract fish, animals, or birds so that you can catch them

bleak
without anything to make you feel happy or hopeful

buddy
a friend

burden
something difficult or worrying that you are responsible for

chauffeur
someone whose job is to drive a car for someone else

crawl space
an area of limited height under a floor or roof, giving access to wiring and plumbing

diabetes
a serious disease in which there is too much sugar in your blood

elder
a member of a tribe or other social group who is important and respected because they are old

empathetic
showing an ability to understand and share the feelings of another

exploit
to treat someone unfairly by asking them to do things for you, but giving them very little in return – used to show disapproval

francophone
having French as a first or main language

gastronomic
relating to the art of cooking good food or the pleasure of eating it

harassment
when someone behaves in an unpleasant or threatening way towards you

hobby
an activity that you enjoy doing in your free time

influential
having a lot of influence and therefore changing the way people think and behave

integrate
to become part of a group or society and be accepted by them, or to help someone do this

internship
a job that lasts for a short time, that someone, especially a student, does in order to gain experience 

marathon
a long race of about 26 miles or 42 kilometres

motto
a short sentence or phrase giving a rule on how to behave, which expresses the aims or beliefs of a person, school, or institution

NGO
an organization which helps people, protects the environment etc and which is not run by a government

pandemic
a disease that affects people over a very large area or the whole world

plot
the events that form the main story of a book, film, or play

plumber
someone whose job is to repair water pipes, baths, toilets etc

podcast
a radio programme that can be downloaded from the Internet

prairies
a wide open area of fairly flat land in North America which is covered in grass or wheat

prosperity
when people have money and everything that is needed for a good life

roam
to walk or travel, usually for a long time, with no clear purpose or direction

seamstress
a woman whose job is sewing and making clothes

seasonal
happening, expected, or needed during a particular season

shady
protected from the sun or producing shade

spoiler
a message or report that is intended to ruin the surprising part of a popular film, book etc by telling people about the surprise before they see or read it

sprint
to run very fast for a short distance

tolerance
willingness to allow people to do, say, or believe what they want without criticizing or punishing them

treadmill
a piece of exercise equipment that has a large belt around a set of wheels, that you can walk or run on while staying in the same place

vulnerable
someone who can be easily harmed or hurt
