Etymology: a branch of linguistics that studies the origins of words or expressions



Words that change by themselves - sometimes words stay the same but their meanings change.


Forest

An area of land that is covered with trees.

EXAMPLE: The bears live in the forest.

The meaning of "forest" has become more specific over time. Forest used to describe any area of the countryside.




Meat

Food that comes from animal flesh.

EXAMPLE: Hamburgers are made from meat.

The meaning of "meat" has become more specific over time. Meat used to describe any food that people ate.




Starve

To die from hunger

EXAMPLE: Early settlers of Canada sometimes starved in the winter.

The meaning of "starve" has become more specific over time. At one point, "starve" meant to die by any means.
