Idiom: an expression having a special meaning which is not clear from the usual meaning of the words in the expression




To buy a lemon

Definition: to purchase a defective product, to buy a bad product

EXAMPLE: The car we bought last summer is a real lemon

EXAMPLE: Kerry bought a lemon. His computer has been in the shop five times in three weeks.



To be in the hole

Definition: to owe a great deal of money ( to be in debt)

EXAMPLE: I bought the car. Now I'm in the hole.

EXAMPLE: Debora is twenty dollars in the hole to her friend Teresa.



To get the ax (axe)

Definition: to be dismissed from work (fired)

EXAMPLE: Sandra got the ax because she was stealing from her workplace.

EXAMPLE: To be honest, getting the axe from my last job made me a better worker at this job.



To get up on the wrong side of the bed

Definition: to wake up in a bad mood

EXAMPLE: Stay away from the boss this morning. I think he got up on the wrong side of the bed.

EXAMPLE: I got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.
