Idiom: an expression having a special meaning which is not clear from the usual meaning of the words in the expression




Money talks

Definition: using money to influence or control people

EXAMPLE: You can ask the doorman, but money talks. He will let you in the door for a tip.

EXAMPLE: The son of the wealthy man gets great treatment. It proves to me that money talks.



To feel like a million dollars

Definition: to feel great

EXAMPLE: Since I have been exercising, I feel like a million dollars.

EXAMPLE: To be honest I feel like a million (dollars) since I quit smoking.



To put one's money where one's mouth is

Definition: to do what you say you will do

EXAMPLE: Sandy is always complaining about her job. She should put her money where her mouth is and quit her job

EXAMPLE: Our teacher promised to take us to the zoo. I wish he would put his money where his mouth is and take us to the Zoo.



To pay through the nose

Definition: to pay too much for something

EXAMPLE: Joanne feels bad because she had to pay through the nose to get her car repaired.

EXAMPLE: A trip to Alaska by horse! You'll have to pay through the nose for that.
