Winter 2015

Canada

 Signal Hill, St John's, Newfoundland

Winter in St. John’s is long, usually from November to April. After the cold and long winter, everyone is expecting lots of sunshine in summer. Summer begins from June and goes up to August. There are always a lot of exciting activities for people to join.

On 1st July is Canada Day. There are usually lots of ceremonies and events taking place across the city, such as, watching the sunrise and listening to “O Canada” at Signal Hill; carnival games, concerts and free cupcakes distribution at King George V park in the afternoon, fireworks at Quidi Vidi Lake at night, etc.

On 1st August, it’s Royal Saint John Regatta’s Day held at Quidi Vidi Lake. There are kayak competitions in which trained rowers participate every year. Around the lake, thousands of people sit on the grass, watching races, enjoying their food. And there are also funny games for kids and food vending on the spot.

My favourite activity is the Lantern Festival; it is on the last Saturday in July. Hundreds of colourful lanterns made with spectacular paper in all types of shapes, such as boats, fishes, dragons, houses, UFOs and so on, are hung in Victoria Park, as well as glowing glass jars are displayed. It looks fantastic when the sky is getting dark and all the lanterns are lit on. Then amazing fire show performance is played for the public, and the all-day events are free or by donation. All these activities make it the nicest event for me on a warm and beautiful summer night.

There are also many other exciting summer activities for people living here, such as Strawberry Festival on Lester’s Farm, wild blueberry picking at different sites of St. John’s in August, picnic on Topsail Beach with family and friends, fishing and digging clams on coast outside the city, etc.

St. John’s is a beautiful city with natural landscapes, and people here are nice and positive. When summer comes, people try to enjoy the sunshine with their loved ones, family, friends and pets. I am happy living in St. John’s.
