The Islamic religion depends on five pillars:

  1. To bear witness that there is no god but “Allah” and Muhammad is his messenger.
  2. Pray
  3. Zakat – Donate money to the poor
  4. Fasting during Ramadan
  5. Hajj of the Kaaba – To make a pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia to Mecca

Fasting during Ramadan is the fourth of the five pillars of Islam.

The Quran  prescribes fasting for Muslims who are mature and healthy to fast.

Muslims such as seniors ,children and  pregnant women must not fast.

Muslims believe that fasting is an opportunity to become closer to God.

It is also an opportunity to become compassionate to those in need.

Fasting is also a way to learn patience and to break bad habits.

Ramadan an occasion that every Muslim waits for every year to rest from all the troubles of the world. This helps them to separate from all of the troubles that spoil the purity of our hearts and the rest of

limitations of our human psyche.

Fasting for 30 days from sunrise to sunset means that I challenge my instinctive humanity and at the end,  my will  will win .  For example, during fasting, you will also keep yourself away from food, drink, sex, and anger.  This will make you strong and show that you can achieve your goals.

Also during Ramadan, mosques host large iftars, which means a special feast, especially for the poor and needy. Nightly prayers called tarawih are also held in mosques after iftar.  It’s a chance to bring friends and neighbors together and break the fast and pray together .  After Ramadan it is time to celebrate Eid .  For Muslims it is a gift from God.

I wait for Ramadan to clear my mind and just concentrate on being a better person.  I feel compassion and satisfaction from God and satisfaction about myself .  It is a time to hold my actions and to see what I can fix in my mind, body and soul.
