English

Laptop on table in front of chalkboard. Text on laptop reads Never say I can't

Now I going to tell you about one of my inspirational life experiences and I hope, at least, someone can learn from this.  In life, you should always have goals and these should always be high; and everything is possible when you give it your best effort and dedication. Sometimes, things don’t go your way but you should remember to keep going and stay strong.

I want to share the story of my journey of learning the English language. It was not easy for me as probably is for anyone who is a little older, but with some efforts and dedication, I made it possible.  Since the time in my high school in my country, Guatemala, I never liked the English class language.  As time passed by, I saw the need to go out of my country and expand my horizons, because, in Guatemala, things are going from bad to worse.  I immigrated to the United States, and lived for eight years in Charlotte, North Carolina. There, I enrolled in CPCC, to take English classes in the afternoons twice a week.  When I started working, my bosses and co-workers all spoke Spanish, and I even found a church where they spoke Spanish so learning English wasn’t so important anymore. It was put on the backbench and that was a big mistake in my life!

Many years later, I had to move to Canada due to a family situation and it is here that I realized I had wasted a lot of time by not learning English while I was in the States. Not being able to communicate in English had a strong impact on me; because, here in Estevan, Saskatchewan, I had no choice but to speak in English.  In my early years working here, I suffered a lot of humiliation and contempt because I did not completely understand what they told me due to which I made mistakes in doing my job.  All of this prompted my desire to study the language, and now I can tell you, not with pride but with much humility, that if you set your goals, you can also achieve everything in this life. You have to struggle and strive to make your goals, your dreams a reality. Don’t give up, do not give up, and above all ‘Never say I can’t’! That is a phrase that does not exist for me!

Last but not least, I want to especially thank my teachers, Mrs. Olga P. and Mrs. Zareen R., for their valuable contribution in my learning process. They are dedicated teachers and have a passion to teach and, today, I am confident using the English language due to their support. In short, with time and continuous hard work, you reap the fruits of your labor!
