Winter 2015

Driving

driver hands on the wheel

When I was a kid, I dreamt of driving my own car. In April of 2009, I came to Canada and noticed that majority of the people drove their car which motivated me to pursue my dream.  So, while I was in my live-in caregiver program, I enrolled in a driving school. In 2010 I passed my written exam and was handed my G1 license.

In acquiring my G2, my patience was tested. Anybody who failed in taking their license can relate to me. I failed six times on my road test, and this involved lots of money spent in practice with instructor and time-off at work just to pass the test, but I never gave up. So, in my seventh try, I finally got my G2 license in September of 2013, and on that same year I got my first car in the winter of 2013.

My first long drive was to Tobermory, and since then we always have our camping in Tobermory. I have also driven to Montreal, Ottawa, Quebec, Kingston, Algonquin, Lampton Shores and Niagara Falls. I enjoy driving in winter times, and every winter we drive to Blue Mountain.

I learned from this experience to never give up on my dreams. During those days when I had hard times getting my license to drive, I always remembered Winston Churchill in one of his speeches saying: NEVER GIVE UP.  Some dreams just take longer to come true.

Now I am so blessed and glad that I can help others through my driving. As simple as, giving rides to co-workers or friends that are newcomers to Canada, taking them to some of our tourist destinations like Thousand Islands, Marineland etc. I feel the joy whenever I see their faces happy, most especially the kids who are still adjusting to the cultures here in Canada, and I am thankful that I can be of help in simple ways, and it is because I did not give up.
