Employment

Physiotherapist supporting disabled man

My volunteer experience is a great way to demonstrate skills that may not show up in your paid position. My experience started last year twenty seventeen (2017) and came to an end in September twenty eighteen (2018). It was a great opportunity to be able to help playing an important part of someone’s daily living.

I played the roll of a personal support worker which includes me helping with relieving the family members from their loved ones to able to run errands etc.  My duties while working were to feed, wash and bathe the family member and be a companion.

I was asked by the wife if and when she passes I could continue to watch her husband. I took on the position and cared for him while he was at home and when he was placed in a nursing home. I took the time to listen to him and care for him to the best of my ability to make his lasting stay the best it could be.

When it came down to his last days here on earth I grew to accept my position as a PSW much more strongly as I knew my skills allowed my client to not have to worry or be frightened about who was going to care for him.

The opportunity I was given to care for someone other than a family member made me realize that not only are there sick and dying people out there but there are also individuals that have no one to care for them or be a companion to.

I know deep down in my heart I fulfilled my promise to the wife, I cared for her husband with pride and respect, and I hope to be able to continue caring and fulfilling people’s lives where life takes me.
