Winter 2015

Celebration

Port Louis, Mauritius - Jan 4, 2017. Christmas tree at the main square of Port Louis, Mauritius.

Generally, among the twelve months of the year, December is regarded as the most glorious one on the Island of Mauritius. In fact, it is considered to be the time of freedom, peace and fun activities like shopping, fairs, festivals, and other celebrations.

The two most popular festivals are Christmas and New Year. Two-three weeks before the New Year’s Eve people clean the courtyard and paint their dwellings. The highways and streets get decorated with multi-colored electric bulbs. Each city is overcrowded with shoppers who come from rural areas. Toys and colorful clothing of latest fashions & styles are exhibited at each popular shopping center. The pavements look even more attractive since the vendors display their beautiful merchandise in an orderly way. One day before the New Year’s Eve, ladies are busy in their kitchens as they prepare all kinds of food and cakes for the two biggest holidays.

At the end of the month, on December 31st, we cheer in January 1 with firecrackers and everybody will put on their new and beautiful clothes. After midnight people will drink, eat, dance and play the drums until early hours in the morning. It's interesting that people will keep having fun for two whole weeks on the island.

After all, December is exclusively a month where we can have fun with the whole family, be cheerful, celebrate life and wish each other good things in the New Year.
