Employment

Support working holding hand of senior

My occupation is Personal Support Worker. People call this PSW. I will share with you the education you need to do this work, the responsibilities of the job and why I like it.

This work needs a diploma, so I went to school to learn the PSW program for eight months and got the diploma and a CPR certificate. I found my job after graduation. I have worked for an agency until now.

My clients are people who need help and my duties are caring for them. Most of my clients are seniors. My responsibilities are following the care plan, assisting with their activity of daily living-eating such as eating, dressing and grooming, and personal care such as toileting, bathing and perineal care. Canada is entering an aging society. After WW2, many people were born. These people are called baby boomers.  They are now seniors and more and more seniors need help, so many PSW workers are needed.

I like my job. It is not only that I want to help people, but also I have learned a lot in the process. Most of my clients are very kind. They teach me a lot of English and share their life experiences with me -things they have gone through. It is meaningful work.

My work is very hard, but when I see clients getting better and safer, I feel very happy.
