Settlement

plane landing

Leaving my homeland was one of the hardest decisions I have made in my life. After more than 24 hours of travel, I finally set foot in Canada on March 12, 2016. I started at Toronto Pearson Airport where I had to go first to the immigration office to know if I will be granted a pass to enter Canada. After they put a stamp on my passport, I had to wait for my connecting flight going to the province where my husband was based. I clearly remember that night on my way to Rosetown, Saskatchewan, I was wondering why I did not see any buildings and all I could see were fields. I remember one of my husband’s friend telling me that you couldn’t see any buildings because it was night time and I would have to wait until tomorrow to see them. When we arrived home, my husband told me that we were living in a small town where there are not many establishments and not even a mall or Walmart. I was dumbfounded, but after a while I realized that it didn’t matter if we lived in a rural community and what was important was that I was finally with my husband.

On my first week in Canada, it started to snow again and it was my first ever snow experience. I went outside and played with the snow like a kid. I had fun for weeks meeting new people and adjusting to the cold weather.

After a month, I started looking for a job as I became bored with just staying inside the house and waiting for my husband to come home from work, plus I needed to help with the household expenses. Going for a job interview was a nerve-wracking experience for me because I was not that confident with my speaking skills and sometimes, I heard an unfamiliar word from the interviewer. After going to some interviews, I was able to get a job offer from the care home which is still my employer up to now.

This coming March 2019, will be my third year here in Canada. I am thankful where I am right now because being in Canada has helped my husband and I start our life together. We enjoy the free health benefits, the nice community and lots of beautiful places to visit. Coming here to Canada was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
