Canada

Canadian flag waving with Parliament Buildings hill and Library in the background

Each province is like a separate part of Canada.  They are not all the same.  When I immigrated from Ukraine, I lived in New Brunswick first.  Now, I live in Ottawa and I’d like to compare the two cities.

First of all, Saint John, New Brunswick is a pretty small town. It doesn't have big shops and there are not so many places to have fun. But its community is very friendly. People on the streets are mostly relaxed and the traffic on the roads is light.

Additionally, the town is near the ocean. When we lived there, we used to go to the beach to breathe the fantastic fresh air. Also, the sea near Moncton is the warmest sea on the northern part of the American Atlantic coast. We used to go to the Shediac beaches in the summer and had fun the whole day long.

Unlike Saint John, Ottawa is a big city and it is also the capital of Canada. Of course, there are many places to have fun. There are several museums and art galleries and it’s interesting to walk in the downtown area near Parliament Hill.  It has many big shops and even outlets. But people here are busier.

It is also placed in a very good geographical position. It’s placed between a few other big cities in Canada like Montreal, Toronto and Quebec City. We visit our friends in Montreal a few times every month.  It’s not a long drive.

Of course, these two places have their pros and cons. So, which do I prefer?  Ottawa.  It has a much bigger population and you have more opportunities to find a job and make friends.

I liked New Brunswick but I’m glad I live in Ottawa now.
