Aurora borealis in NWT

This March Break I took a trip to Yellowknife with my family to see the aurora. It was a long and exhausting journey as we had to take two flights to reach Yellowknife. However, when we arrived there and finally saw the aurora lights, it was absolutely worth it.

Yellowknife is the capital city of Northwest Territories. It is famous for the aurora lights, which is also called Northern Lights. There is a big lake named, Great Slave Lake in the city. In winter, there is thick ice on the surface of the lake, so cars can drive on it. There is even a road made by the government, with speed sign and other road signs, therefore it is safe to drive on it.

After sunset, we drove the car on the frozen lake, which is away from the city, to the Aurora Village. Without city light’s pollution, it was easy to see the aurora light. It is not that you can see the aurora every day, but even if there is no aurora, you still can see tons of stars in the sky. It is amazing!

Every March, there is snow castle festival held at the Slave Lake. The are many wonderful snow art productions and a big snow slide, which both adults and kids can enjoy.

Of course, it is very cold in Yellowknife, so you need to bundle up and do not forget your face mask. It is very important to keep your face and neck warm.

I heard from the owner of the bed and breakfast place we were staying in, that it is also beautiful in September, when you can see the aurora and its reflection in the river. Next time, if we go again, we definitely will go there in the fall.
