Winter 2015

Driving

Biker rides on winter slippery road. First-person view.

Every teenager has a goal in life to get their driver's license. That's why I got my driving license at the age of 18. However, I chose this topic because this is a necessity if you live in Canada. As everyone has their own experience with driving, I do too.  But before I go further, I want to compare driving in my homeland, which is India, with Canada.  In my country, we have right-hand driving and we prefer manual vehicles compared to automatic. And according to my experience in India, I used to ride motorbikes instead of a car. So, it was already a challenge for me to learn how to drive a car. Second, in my homeland, we don't drive so fast, especially because of the heavy traffic.

So, when I came to Canada in 2016 I realized riding a motorbike or bike in winter will be difficult. But I didn’t know how to drive a car. As I was new in this country, I didn’t have friends who could teach me driving. So, one day in -15*C I was riding my bike to buy some groceries. Then a stranger saw me from his car and he followed me to my house. The minute I was going to enter my house he approached me and asked me why I hadn’t bought a car because winter was going to be much worse and you need a car to go anywhere.  I told him I don't have any friends who could teach me to drive. Then he said he could teach me. I asked him curiously how much he was going to charge me, but he said nothing.  He just couldn’t see my pain. After that, he gave me his cell number and he left. After a couple of days, I took my written test which, I cleared with a glorious number. And then I called that gentleman who promised me he will train me in future. And, believe it or not, he showed up and my training started. After a few months when I was almost ready to take the road test, he asked me to go to a driving school to check my confidence. And I tried to pay some money to that gentleman which he refused at first, but when I insisted, he took some money.

However, after a few days, I went to a driving school, which is where my confidence was built up. And after a month I took my road test which I cleared with no mistake. And the instructor gave me a class 5 license which was pretty exciting for me. It's like a dream come true and all the credit goes to that unknown gentleman.
