Tibetan food Tsampa roasted barley with butter and cheese with Tibetan butter tea in Lhasa

Tibetan culture is unique because of its food, dress, and special New Year celebrations.

First, Tibetan people often make their own food. For example, Tsampa is the main Tibetan traditional food. It’s made from barley. First, we clean the barley, then we roast it and after that we make flour which we eat. We often eat it with a special tea called butter tea. To make a butter tea we first put cold water and dry tea together and boil it. Then, we strain the tea and after that, we put it in a churn and add a small piece of butter, salt and milk and then shake well. Finally, it is ready to drink.

Secondly, we have three difference provinces, Dhothoe, Dhomey and Utsang, and all have different dress styles. For example, they have different hats, shoes, colors and designs. I belong to the Utsang Province which wears a simple outfit, in a solid color like a light blue or black.

Moreover, New Year’s celebrations are special in Tibet. On a special altar in our homes, we decorate Khabsay(cookies), butter, tea, salt, chang(barley wine) sweet rice, fruit, and green barley grass. Then, we offer these to the God. After that, we celebrate by getting together and having a drink of the fresh barley wine that we made!

Overall, Tibet has an interesting culture because of its food, dress and special New Year’s traditions. I love sharing information about my culture and I hope you will try to learn more facts about Tibetan life in the future.
