Motherhood

Calendar with a red circle around the number 21

I would like share how I celebrated Mother’s Day in my home country, Syria.

Mother’s Day is celebrated on March 21 in Syria, and is called “Id-al-Umm” and just like in Canada, it’s a very special day. However, there is one more special thing about Mother’s Day in Syria, it’s a public holiday on Mother’s Day!

We would start preparations a week ahead by preparing a lot of traditional Syrian food and desserts and presents. On March 21, my sisters and I would gather at our parents’ house arrange the food and decorate the house. We would also invite close family members.

When everyone is gathered, we would give presents to all the older women in the family - grandmothers, aunts, and for sure, my mother!

We all would then eat the food we prepared and have a lot of fun. The whole family including children and the elders will join together to sing, dance and play some games.

This is how we spent a beautiful time with our lovely family on Mother’s Day and honour our mother and mother like ladies in our family.
