Celebration

Philippino village with traditional Christmas decorations

Christmas in the Philippines may be the longest holiday celebration in the world. The Christmas season begins when the "ber" months start. We often call September through December the “ber” months! As early as September, you can see colorful decorations in the streets, homes and offices and Christmas carols start playing on the radio. All of this Christmas decor will be taken down only after the Feast of the Three Kings on January 6th.

Simbang Gabi this is one of the oldest Christmas traditions in the Philippines. It is a 9-day, pre-dawn mass that begins at 4 o’clock in the morning on December 16th and lasts to the 24th. The Simbang Gabi is a way of thanksgiving. Some Filipino believe that if you completed the 9 day mass your wish might come true.

The highlight of the celebration is Noche Buena where family comes together to share good meal on Christmas Eve. Queso de bola (cheese ball) and sweetened ham are usually served for this meal. When the clock strikes 12 midnight, the family then proceeds with gift giving. Christmas day is oftentimes spent for grand family reunions.

Even in these changing times, one thing that remains the same is that Filipinos will always find a way to celebrate Christmas with their beloved families.
