Janai Purnima known as the festival of sacred thread is one of the biggest festivals of males in Bramin/chhetri ethnic group in Hinduism. This festival falls in the month of Bhadra (August) on one of the full moon days.

Janai is circular in shape made by using six threads in which each of the thread contains six by six tiny threads and you must wear it across the chest. A Hindu priest makes the thread sacred by putting water on the Janai and reciting a "Mantra", which is a sacred utterance or the group of Sanskrit words. It is believed that Janai can increase psychological and spiritual power of a person who wears it.

This thread is only given the first time to males of mid and late childhood by their "Guru" (a teacher) in a ritual called Bratabandha. It is a daylong ritual. Since then, they need to replace their Janai every year.

Including sweets, Hindu people eat quati, a kind of vegetable made by mixing different types of seeds of beans and lentils on this special day. People believed that such type of vegetables keep a person strong and safe from cold.
