The first job in Canada is always difficult to get, particularly for newcomers, which makes it more cherished and valuable. Recently, I just landed my first job in Canada and find it full of challenges and opportunities. How to succeed in this first job, and also make it a platform for a bright career in a new living area, is critical and essential. Following are four points to help you become successful in the workplace, especially when it is your first job.

Live in a Multicultural Environment
Since immigration and globalization are getting increasingly popular, working in Canada has become more and more multicultural. I have colleagues from different places in Canada or abroad, with various mother tongues. Knowing how to collaborate with others who are from diverse cultural backgrounds has gradually become a necessity. As newcomers, you can be very proud of your own culture, but also do need to know how to respect others.

Show a Strong Work Ethic
With an explicit job goal and keen responsibility, we can fulfill the job requirements passionately, efficiently and faithfully. Several characteristics of a strong work ethic are always going to be cherished, including but not limited to punctuality, politeness, diligence, prudence, possessiveness, earnestness. A strong work ethic can help you immerse into your job easily and smoothly, and also earn the respect and support from colleagues, bosses and clients.

Enhance Professional Skills
Professional skills are the most significant and important qualifications which mainly decide what kind of achievements we may gain. Skills cover a broad range including professional expertise and technique, in addition to general capability such as logical thinking, writing and problem solving. Improvement and polishing of your skills are not only suggested for the current job, but also are essential in meeting your long-term career goals.

Balance Teamwork and Independence
Most jobs require these two abilities which are often mentioned in the job interview. Teamwork provides you an opportunity to work with others in accomplishing a goal, while independence allows you to thrive in situations when others’ assistance is not required. Nevertheless, teamwork and independence are sometimes complementary. If you can balance these two characteristics well, it will enhance your competitiveness and competence in any prospective tasks.

Once you step into your first job in Canada, it creates prospective opportunities and also brings challenges. Jobs require different qualifications, but they also share similar demands for their employees. Although you may encounter disparate difficulties during the initial stages, you should not back down. Keep on going all out while having an understanding of the above-mentioned factors, and you will find your bearings in your first Canadian job and achieve high job accomplishments.
