Winter 2015

General

honeycombs

For the production of honey, you need honeybees. The bees need a field of honey plants in order to collect nectar. The beekeeper finds a place for good honey harvests that comply with conditions like an open field full of space as well as a pond located near by.

The start of beekeeping season in Saskatchewan begins in April and ends in October. The main honey harvests take place in July and August.

Three weeks after the blossoming of flowers and alfalfa (or other plants) beekeepers usually start extracting the honey. Using a leaf blower, the bees are blown onto the grass. Then the boxes are loaded onto a truck and taken to the extracting place. Then, the boxes are placed into a heating room, where the frames with honey are heated.

The frames are put in the uncapper machine where the honeycomb lids are cut off. Then, the frames are put in the extractor where the separation of the honey takes place. Afterward, honey is pumped into the tank. The next day after settling, pure honey is poured into barrels. This selection process takes place usually from 2 to 3 times a season.

For the winter, we feed the bees with sugar syrup. Beehives in winter are wrapped with a special material and are left outside until spring.

Then, the process starts again.
