Homeland

soldier in hat facing Kuwait flag

After seven month of chaos, fear and suffering, my home country Kuwait was liberated in 1991 from Iraqi aggression and became independent on February 26th.

On February 27th, 1991 in the early morning, with a heart full of joy and happiness, after celebrating the liberation of Kuwait, we went to visit my parents in their house which was located in Jahra City.

On the highway while driving towards my parents’ house, Iraqi soldiers who were killed inside their car from the Americans’ airstrike grabbed our attention. What shocked and impressed me the most was that the soldiers had a big dream to deliver toys, clothes etc which they had probably stolen or bought for their families, but they were killed which made them look like a statue.

Most of the soldiers were young like buds that were starting to become flowers, but because of their leaders’ greed the flowers were scattered in the desert.

Soldier’s lives were too short to enjoy, exactly as the poppy flower that has a really short life and is very delicate. They were young people who could have had a bright future for their families and their homeland.

War is ruinous for both sides whether you win or you lose, so let us put hand- in-hand and walk together towards world peace.
