Homeland

Map of Bangladesh in the colors of the national flag

The name of my homeland is Bangladesh. It is situated in Southeast Asia. It became independent in 1971 after a nine month long war. About 160 million people live in this small country. It is also a matter of great pride that we are the only nation who sacrificed their lives for the sake of their mother tongue on February 21st of 1952. In order to show respect for them UNESCO has declared 21st of February as International Mother Language Day.

We have a lot of beautiful places. The famous places for tourists to visit is Sundarban, Cox's Bazar, St. Martin island, Kuakata, Bandarban, Rangamati, and Sylhet Tea Garden. Sundarban is the largest Mangrove forest of the world. Cox's Bazar has longest sea beach.

In addition, Bangladesh is a land of rivers because there are many large and deep rivers in it. The Padma, the Meghna, and the Jamuna are the biggest rivers where various kinds of fishes are found. The land of this country is very fertile where different kinds of crops and fruits are grown.

There are six seasons in Bangladesh and the weather and climate of all seasons are totally different from one another. For instance, based on the seasons, different kinds of fruits, vegetables and crops are cultivated. Rice, jute, sugarcane, potato, tobacco, pulse, vegetables, spices, oil seed, tea, etc. are our main crops. Fish and rice is our staple food. Our seasonal fruits like mango, jackfruit, guava, black berry, pineapple, banana, coconut, watermelon, etc. are great attraction of the people of home and abroad.

Moreover, Bangladeshi people are very family-oriented, friendly and hospitable. Most of the people are Muslims. The others are Hindus, Christians, Buddhists and Tribes, who also live here. We have a lot of cultural events. The main occasions that people celebrate are Eid-ul-Fitr (one of the biggest events for Muslims after one month of Ramadan), and Pohela Boishakh (first day of Bengali year).

Bangladesh is considered as a gift of nature because of its natural beauties and resources. Therefore, the development of our country is increasing rapidly and I feel proud of this country.
